I got a Citizens takeout letter. What does it mean?
Updated September 28, 2026· Sources verified September 28, 2026· Educational information, not legal advice
Short answer
It means a private insurer approved by Florida regulators has offered to take over your Citizens policy. If the offer is no more than 20% above your Citizens renewal premium, you are no longer eligible to stay with Citizens. If it is more than 20% higher, you can stay — but you must actively choose to. If you don't respond, Citizens says the policy moves to the least expensive offer.

Not exactly. A takeout moves your policy to a private insurer rather than ending it. But if you lose Citizens eligibility and don't like the private policy, you are effectively shopping again — so treat the letter's deadline seriously.
